1989 Season

Head Coach: Mike Madsen

Bright colors of black and gold streaked across the path, revealing their true colors for the upcoming battle. No, it wasn't a swarm of hornets, and the battle weapons weren’t their stingers. These competitors were the girls cross country team, and the weapons they used were speed, stamina, and spirit. According to Coach Mike Madsen, "The team was an average group of runners that worked hard to become an above-average team." This year there were two individuals who advanced to the sectionals: Melinda Grieco and Amy Van Allen. Melinda was also named the most valuable player. “We worked together to achieve our goals and didn't compete against each other,” she said. This year's cross country team continued a streak of being among the top three in conference. To prepare for their meets, the girls practiced after school. There were many returning runners to help them record a 4-2 mark and place third in dual meets. They were also among the top five finalists in the invitationals. “Practice was always different. You could never expect to do the same thing twice,” commented Amy Van Allen.
