1997 Season
Head Coach: Mike Madsen
Assistant Coach: Dennis Karnstedt
As the season came to an end, the girls cross country team kept their 19-year record of placing in the top three in the West Suburban Conference meet. It's a goal and tradition that has been kept every year since 1979.
They relied on pack running in order to place well in the team and individual standings. They focused more on strategic formats this year in attempting to defeat their opponents. The competitive spirit was carried throughout the team, with large time drops showing dramatically.
The team once again proved itself with outstanding accomplishments. From the young talented freshmen to strong veteran seniors, everybody contributed equally. Not only were there new runners but there were new coaches to add to the excitement.
As the season progressed injuries became a large obstacle to face. Some runners also committed themselves to another sport or activity. Through all of this, the team was able to defeat Morton 27-28, which was a crucial meet to build up the opportunities for conference.
When regionals approached, the Hornets had the opportunity again to beat Morton one last time. Among them Colleen Amish placed 15th out of 70 girls. Through it all the lady Hornets still had a great season and managed to come together as a team this year.
Several all-conference runners, including Natalie Kong, Amish, and Joni Ranchero, held the team together.
"This was a successful year of rebuilding as we continued our tradition of always finishing in the top three at conference. We had our largest team ever, including many first-time runners." - Coach Mike Madsen
"My racing performance this season was that I believed I was physically able to run each race, but I lacked a positive mental attitude. I took this year more seriously compared to last year." - Sarah Augustine, Varsity
"I had a stress fracture in my shin and it was difficult to come back from missing half the season. But I worked my way into the top ten which was a great accomplishment." - Anjali Iyengar, Varsity
"My most memorable performance was at the Minooka Invitational, when I ran my personal record of 13:07. We came in 5th as a team." - Dylana Leung, Sophomore
