One foot in front of the other...Struggling for breath...Keep moving. Having run cross country her whole high school career, sophomore Meagan DeSalvo knows the realities of pushing the limits.
After having run only three meets, DeSalvo suffered a stress fracture to her shin that kept her on the sidelines for several months.
"Meagan was one of our top runners," senior Amanda Gauthier said. "It was difficult for us to keep going without her there to push us to be better."
The drive and perseverance of the team however, did not diminish.
"Of course I had to take time off to heal, which did take a lot of patience," DeSalvo said. "But I had a lot of support from my team and was eventually able to come back and compete."
And compete she did. In only her fourth race of the season, the Reavis Sectional, DeSalvo placed twenty-first, qualifying as an individual for state.
"This is her second qualification in two years," Coach Gail Huster said. "It's cool because her triplet brothers (Donald and Matthew DeSalvo) also qualified for state as a team, the first time a boys' team has come out of South since 1986."
It's not surprising that DeSalvo has done so well this year. As a freshman she placed third at Conference and was a champion at the Minooka Flight Meet. She qualified for Sectionals and State, where she finished forty-seventh overall.
"Meagan is very talented, which is why I think everyone feels good about her being able to make a comeback this year," Huster said, "but she also has the personality to match her ability, which is what makes her such a team leader."
