Hinsdale South Cross Country

The 2023 Hornets cross country team was one of the smallest teams in Hinsdale South history, with only the 2019 state-qualifying team being smaller in the past 35 years. As that state-qualifying team showed, though, you don't have to have a big team to have a successful season.

The team started out the season strong with loads of personal records at the team's first invite hosted at Lewis University by St. Ignatius. The team did not finish high in that meet, though, showing there was a lot of work still to do as the season went on.

As the season did go on, injuries and the small roster prevented the team from scoring highly in meets. The personal records kept coming, though, and when it came time for the Regional race at Miller Meadows, the girls had a shot at qualifying as a team to move on to Sectionals. The preliminary results showed the Hornets taking the final qualifying spot, but when the results were finalized the team finished a scant three points behind Glenbard South for the sixth and final qualifying spot. On the bright side, senior Annabella Ramirez and junior Andy Esposito qualified as individuals and earned a chance to make State.

At the Sectional meet at Lewis University, Annabella ran a strong race with a time of 20:51 and qualified as an individual for the State meet. Annabella kept a streak of Hornets at State going that had started in 2016 and finished her cross country career with a fantastic P.R. of 20:38.
