Hinsdale South Cross Country

2024 SEASON

There were only seven runners on the 2024 Hinsdale South cross country team when the season officially started. Given that you need at least five runners to score as a team in a cross country race and seven runners for a full team, the season was going to be a challenging one with little margin for error or injury.

The girls did a great job recruiting, though, and the team ended up with 16 runners by the end of the season. The team didn't have much of a shot of qualifying for Sectionals and State, but there were some great individual performances.

Senior Andy Esposito and sophomore Yelena Haidamaka won the team's Sportsmanship awards. Andy had been a steady presence on the team for four years and the team chemistry owed a large part to Andy helping plan activities and encouraging everyone. Yelena joined the team late, but always supported her new teammates. She was the only non-varsity runner to attend all three postseason races after conference to cheer on her teammates. Junior Tree Koepfle won the Most Improved award after taking her lifetime P.R. from a 23:23 during her freshman year to a 21:57 this season. She worked hard over the summer to improve and become one of the team's top runners.

The MVP award of the season went to Anna Wilcox, who was the team's lone qualifier for Sectionals and State and also earned All-Conference honors with her 13th-place finish at O'Brien Park in Downers Grove. Anna ended the season with the 14th-fastest P.R. in team history of 19:16 (which is also the 8th-fastest time by a Hornet at KLM), the 18th fastest time at Detweiller Park with a time of 19:46 that she ran at State, and she became one of only 17 girls to break 19:30 at Hinsdale South history. After a stagnant sophomore season, Anna figured things out and came back strong to run these incredible times.
