1983 Season

"Over hill, over dale, as we hit the the muddy trail, we are the Hornets running along." This song could frequently heard drifting from the bus of the Girls' Cross Country team. This year the harriers had an impressive start winning the home opener Hornet-Red Devil Invitational. After two weeks of hard practicing they came through again beating 16 teams to win the prestigious Reavis Invitational. Finishing the season with an excellent 6-1 conference record, the Hornets had a good, although somewhat disappointing, 3rd place finish at the DPVL meet. At the DPVL meet Eileen Slowikowski, Carrie Faber, and Sally Kurth were named All-Conference. At the District meet, Senior Eileen Slowikowski was the only runner from the fine team to advance to the Sectional meet. After two more weeks of practice and a consistent run at sectionals, Eileen concluded her season with an excellent 20th place finish in the State meet. This earned her the All-State standing and made her the first athlete in Hinsdale South's history to be All-State in two sports.
Although the team was relatively small with only 12 girls, there were 3 captains, Lynda Schlueter, Eileen Slowikowski, and Sally Kurth. More leadership came from Coach Rock Madsen. Another quality this swell team had was depth. When invitational rules would only allow 7 runners, there was always competition for these top spots because there were so many capable runners. Out of these runners, Eileen Slowikowski, Carrie Slowikowski was named most valuable and Jackie Smalley was named most improved by the team. Even though it will be a challenge to replace the seniors, next year's team should still be solid if everyone returns and stays healthy. "Wherever you go, you will always know that the Hornets are running along."
