Hinsdale South Cross Country

1994 Season

Success came easy to this year's cross country team. With a good conference meet and two state runners, Coach Mike Madsen described this season as "the best in years." The team advanced farther than it every had, and set the stage for years to come.

One standout was first year team member Laura Schlenker, a senior. Described as the most improved, Schlenker strived all the way to sectionals. Madsen said, "She went from being an average runner to being an exceptional one."

The team placed third in the conference, which made the 16th straight year that they have placed in the top three. Also, the entire team advanced to the sectional competition but missed going to the state meet by just a couple of points. The team finished the sectional with a score of 158 points.

Only once before has South sent two of their runners to state, but this year Liz Reese and Erika Coull-Parenty added to that list. Coming out of sectionals, Coull-Parenty finished ninth, and Reese placed 16th to earn themselves a trip to state.

When you wrap all of that together, the outcome is one heck of a season. Madsen was very happy, saying, "We got a lot out of the talent we had this year."
