1996 Season

Fighting through the blistering heat of August to the biting cold of November, the girls cross-country team worked hard to achieve their goals. The squad finished second in conference, qualified for sectionals, and had two individual state qualifiers.

In the highlight of the season, Erika Coull-Parenty and Dalia Wenckus both ran at the state meet. Coull-Parenty finished 11th, making her a three-time all-stater. Wenckus, a cross-country newcomer, said, "It was fun and an experience that I will never forget.”

The Hornets sole conference loss came at the hands of Willowbrook, 26-29. The team cruised through the rest of the conference season, only to be defeated again by Willowbrook at the conference meet. “It was disappointing not winning conference, but we knew we had given it our best effort,” said senior Jamie Bechina.

Thanks to a solid team performance, the Hornets finished fifth at the regional meet. In the state's toughest sectional field, the team garnered tenth place, and defeated Willowbrook and Hinsdale Central in the process. “It felt good to have two strong team performances round out the season,” said Katie Moss.

Head coach Mike Madsen said of the team's performance, “One of the best seasons we' ve ever had in girls cross country. We were very competitive in conference, and we finished in the top ten in one of the toughest sectionals in the state.”
