Gasping for air with her legs burning, senior Anisha Chinwalla counted in her head and sang a song to endure her workout of the day in the forest preserve on Oldfield Road.
"It is up to me to set the tone for practice," Chinwalla said.
She took charge after many of last years leaders graduated. Chinwalla didn't have to look far for other senior leaders. This team had the most seniors the cross-country team has ever had. Eleven of the 29 runners were seniors.
Coach Gail Huster said, "Because the fact that the girls are older, they understand what I want of them and how much I want them to improve."
"Different people will step up on different days," senior Alanna Kerstein said. "It depends on who is feeling the workout."
Each senior had their own role on the team.
"[Seniors] Casey Eilbert and Nicole Blumenstein would get the bandanas for the bandana run," Kerstein said. "[Seniors] Laura Martinez and Holly Johnson organized the big sister and little sister gift exchange."
The seniors were considered to be a mature class. They vocalized what was expected of the underclassmen at practices and at meets.
"A lot of the seniors would encourage the underclassmen to get up and cheer for others and make sure to properly cool down," senior Holly Johnson said.
Johnson, along with the rest of the seniors, acknowledged that the camaraderies between the team brough alive the tradition of the team.
