As her lungs gasp for air and her legs ache, freshman Elizabeth Lowery makes the final stride to the finish line. Because of her speed and endurance, she would become and All-Conference runner and Sectional Qualifier. During moments like these, Lowery is glad to have her sister right by her side.
Lowery was a member of two sets of sisters who experiences many examples of support and encouragement as they ran together on the girls' cross-country teams.
Elizabeth and her sister, freshman Rebecca Lowery, who had been running in cross-country events together since fifth grade, competed on the girls' varsity cross-country team. Both sisters believed that competing against each for so many years brought them closer together.
"My sister and I motivate each other. It's nice having someone that you really know to run with," Elizabeth said.
Rebecca agreed. "Although there is some sibling rivalry it helps us run better," Rebecca said. "I like that I can compete with (Elizabeth)."
Sisters junior Emily Mitchell and sophomore Julie Mitchell also bonded while on the girls' JV cross-country team.
"(cross-country) has brought us closer because we spend a lot of time together at home, and we spend lots of time together on the team. We even run together at practices," Emily said.
The Mitchell sisters supported each other when they were pushed beyond their physical and mental comfort zones.
"Having my sister on the team motivates me. We both encourage each other and try to work together to complete the races," Emily said.
Senior Sarah Leganski witnessed the Mitchell sisters support each other throughout the season.
"They are never mad if one does better than the other, but rather encourage each other to push through it," senior cross-country runner Sarah Leganski said.
Girls' Cross-country Coach Gail Huster enjoyed having both sets of sisters on the girls' cross-country teams.
"(The sisters) experience the same workouts and meets, and they are able to use that experience together to help in their success in this sport," Huster said. "They can understand what each other is going through."
