"It felt surreal. It was a moment that I will remember forever," freshman Abigail Peterson said when describing her team's reaction on going to state.

In previous years, the girls have gone individually to state, but this is the first year they will go as a team.

"The top five teams make it to state, and we fought for a slot. We all stepped up a lot in the end," Peterson said.

Not expecting to make it to state, their initial goals included making it to regionals and sectionals.

"I didn't know what to expect going in. My goal was to show the coaches my abilities," Peterson said.

However, the coaches were confident in the team's chances of success.

"(I) knew the girls could make it to state, they just had to give it their all. (I told them to) place (themselves) behind the other girls, and to stand (their) ground," coach Kim Johnson said.

Once they found out they made state, they began to work harder.

"Now, there is more on the line. So far, there has not been major pressure from the coaches, but I think it's because they can see that the idea of going to state has been motivating enough," sophomore Victoria Cius said.

Looking forward to future seasons, the girls hope to improve the team.

"I hope the girls Cross Country team gains a lot of runners and recognition because of our state qualification," Peterson said.
