2003 Season

Only two places away from making it to state, the girls cross country team ended their season with a positive attitude. According to Danielle Kowalski, "We trained really hard this year. Everyone was motivated."
Varsity placed second in conference, fifth at sectionals, and seventh at regionals. Seven of the fastest individuals advanced to sectionals. Danielle Mutters, a sophomore, finished second with her best time, (18:56). Following her was Violet Maka in 35th place (19:17). Then Nicole Johnson in 44th place (19:32), Amanda Swik in 88th place (20:33), Megan Christenson in 89th place (20:34), and Bridget Hayes placed 97th (20:55).
This year was Danielle Mutters' first individual conference title and undefeated dual season. She was only one place away from making it to state. Mutters' said, "This year has been lots of fun and winning the conference and having an undefeated dual meet record is just going to push me harder for next year because now I have set my standards high and want to go down to state and do well."
Although the team as a whole did not make it to state, they had a strong finish. According to Tiffany Nicoll, everyone was really motivated because if they made it to state, they would have been the first to do so in the history of South's girls cross country.
"We had a lot of fun this year. It was really interesting. My goal was 18:45 for three miles," said Nicole Johnson, who was one of the top finished at conference.
One of the standout meets over the season in which they did a great job was the Niles West meet where varsity placed second and junior varsity places first.
"The girls competed very well this year. We have such a fun team, and we all get along great. Coach Jarman did a great job coaching us," said Kelly Borek.
